Climate Week doesn't end with a closing ceremony. It ends with people signing up for the next thing. Two events tonight take the week's conclusions and ask what happens on Monday: a coalition launching with the specific request that everyone present take one concrete step before they leave, and a panel on how the economics that drive extraction also drive the exploitation of the people doing the extracting. Join either, and finish the week having committed to something.

The week closes with a run of events that make their argument through something other than a slide deck. Paint mixed from beetroot peel and coffee grounds. A comedy show set in a community board meeting about flooding, developed with NYC Emergency Management. A woven sculpture built around the birds that die on the city's glass buildings. And in Newtown Creek, a choose-your-own-adventure evening with a Butoh puppetry performance, a choir that learns a Joni Mitchell arrangement in a single day, and a rooftop party to finish. Mete Coban MBE, Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy, Greater London Authority, was in New York this week and shared a clip from his visit. His message was about what London and New York have in common: two city administrations using progressive leadership to deliver for working class communities, and a week spent sharing ideas and building the partnerships that make a fairer London possible.
Great to have him on stage on Tuesday for The AI Forum: Scaling sustainable infrastructure, where the conversation turned to what it takes to build data center capacity that works for the communities hosting it.

The Global Citizen Festival, held on Central Park's Great Lawn each year during the same week as Climate Week NYC, was cancelled this weekend because of severe weather. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had been due to address the crowd. Her message and her commitment went ahead regardless, shared by Global Citizen afterwards.
"When a crisis strikes, we step up and take action. That is what it means to be a Global Citizen."
On behalf of Europe, she pledged more than $800 million to support people in need around the world, covering food, safety, shelter and healthcare for displaced communities, and emergency aid for those hit by war, disease and natural disaster. Global Citizen said the announcement brings the total in commitments from $208.8 million to $1.01 billion.

The Rockaways get the whole day.
Out on the peninsula, a cluster of organizations have built something more ambitious than a single event. Dune Dreams and Peninsula Power runs from ten this morning across several locations around the bay, and it starts where most climate programming doesn't: with how people actually feel about it. A discussion on climate emotions, then a walking tour and scavenger hunt carrying audio recordings from stewards and community members, with artistic interventions along the route. A bird walk runs alongside it.
It's put together by Holes in the Wall Collective, RISE Rockaway, Climate Cafe NYC, the Climate Imaginarium, the Garden by the Bay and the NYC Plover Project, on a stretch of coast that has spent the week being discussed in Manhattan conference rooms as a case study in resilience.

Birds, wildlife and the city they share - It's peak fall migration, which makes the last Sunday of Climate Week an unusually good day to look up. Birds are moving through the city in numbers right now, and several of today's events are built around that: shorebirds and raptors along Rockaway Beach, warblers stopping to refuel on Governors Island, and a slower version in Central Park that starts with journaling and a meditation before anyone lifts a pair of binoculars.
