Delta Electronics

In this member spotlight series, we spoke to Delta Electronics about how being a member of RE100 is helping the organisation deliver innovative technologies that create meaningful impact.

Tell us about Delta Electronics' journey to a net zero future.

As Taiwan technology sector became one of the manufacturing engines of the world, energy shortages and air pollution generated by the growing number of fossil fuel power plants became challenges for the island. Our founder, Mr. Bruce Cheng – a visionary, always thinking outside the box – decided to make our products as energy efficient as possible, to help customers save operational costs and reduce their impact on the environment. Thus, energy efficiency was embedded into the core of Delta’s values and our commitment to sustainability began.

Today, Delta has become a world-leading provider in areas such as e-mobility, industrial automation, building automation, energy infrastructure, and ICT infrastructure. In 2022, our consolidated worldwide sales revenues achieved approximately US$13 billion.

Delta naturally evolved into a sustainable and IoT-based, energy-saving solutions-focused company capable of helping mankind reduce its carbon footprint.  In 2017, we became the first Taiwanese company to set an emissions reduction target under SBTi 2 degrees methodology and, through our energy conservation prowess, surpassed that target four years ahead of schedule.  We found that global sustainability initiatives are such powerful tools to help us push forward with tangible targets and meaningful impacts.

Why did Delta Electronics decide to join RE100?

We were inspired to commit to RE100 to keep advancing as pioneers. We’re deeply connected to Climate Group’s visions and the mission of its corporate programs to provide innovative, clean, and energy-efficient solutions for a better tomorrow. Delta is devoted to innovation and developing technologies to ensure mankind's sustainable future.

What has this enabled Delta Electronics to achieve?

RE100 is such an important commitment to us because, as a turnkey solutions provider, electricity consumption is the single highest carbon emissions source. Focusing on renewable electricity in our operations helps us contribute substantially to the environment and produce eco-friendlier products for our customers.

Net zero emissions is also one of the cornerstones of our ESG endeavors. Since we joined RE100 in 2021, we have been able to set up regional working groups, establish incremental goals, and reach 63% renewable electricity usage globally. Even more important is the solidarity and collective action of RE100 members - collaboration is the only way we are going to reduce carbon emissions and slow down climate change at scale.

Still, there are challenges. Like all manufacturing companies, renewable electricity isn’t abundant in the most factory-dense areas. A lot of local regulations are either non-existent or significantly lacking. Natural environment plays a big factor in the stability of supply, and also on degrading biodiversity.

Luckily, combining resources provided by RE100 and the implementation of several internal policies, we can keep working to reach our 2030 goals. At Delta, we’ve gone back to the core and focused on energy efficiency, which reduces demand and consequently eases pressure in procurement. We’ve also established an internal carbon tax mechanism that encourages using high quality renewable electricity with bundled EACs and drives innovation to accelerate our transformation. Externally, we strive to have a complete procurement strategy, not only for power - renewable energy certificates (RECs) - but also leveraging our capabilities to develop matching programs to meet regulatory requirements.

Helping mankind achieve sustainable development involves the dedication and collaboration of all stakeholders in our ecosystem. Even when the concept of sustainability was first taking root at Delta, Mr. Cheng knew that it was going to take a global effort. That’s why Delta’s brand promise is “Smarter. Greener. Together” and why we are proud members of Climate Group - to cooperate and build together a better tomorrow for the next generation.
