Island Oyster

Island Oyster

1732 First Avenue, NO 24751, New York, 10128, United States

Island Oyster is a one-of-a-kind summer destination in New York City that was recently nominated for a James Beard Foundation 2019 award for Best Restaurant Design.

Featuring easygoing summer fare, a tropically inspired cocktail program and panoramic views of New York Harbor and downtown Manhattan, Island Oyster offers "a true island experience" (CNN). It's "a sight worth leaving Manhattan to see" (Vogue).

Sustainability is key to Island Oyster's operations and values. As a tenant on Governor's Island, we have a responsibility to the surrounding harbor and the waste limitations that naturally exist by operating on an island. In 2019, we began composting our food scraps alongside our regular recycling efforts.

Our menu highlights sustainable seafood such as oysters and underutilized species like Cape Shark. Recently, we've partnered with Earth Matters to minimize our waste from private events—over Memorial Day weekend, we set up multiple waste stations that could handle compost, recycling and trash. Careful management and sorting meant we only generated 8 pounds of trash for a 600 person event.
