Why are energy bills so high? Who makes decisions about our energy system? And what can we do about it?
Join us during NYC Climate Week for a Climate Week Social Reception followed by Power to the People, an interactive Energy 101 workshop designed to help everyday New Yorkers better understand our energy system, why it matters, and how we can build a cleaner, more affordable, and more democratic energy future together.
Through storytelling, hands-on activities, discussion, and real-world examples, participants will explore why so many communities struggle with rising utility costs, who holds power in New York's energy system, and what it will take to create an energy system that works for people and not for-profit utilities. Whether you're brand new to energy issues or already organizing in your community, this workshop is designed to meet people where they are and move us from confusion and frustration toward collective action and hope.
This event is hosted by New York State Energy Democracy Alliance (NYEDA), a statewide coalition working to build an energy system that is clean, affordable, publicly accountable, and controlled by the people, not for-profit utilities. This workshop will provide the knowledge, tools, and connections needed to take action for a just, fossil fuel-free New York.
During this interactive workshop, you'll learn:
⚡ Who makes decisions about New York's energy system and who should.
💸 How utilities set your rates and why energy bills continue to rise.
🌱 The clean, reliable alternatives to fossil fuels that are already transforming communities across New York.
📈 Why utility rate hikes happen and how everyday New Yorkers can influence the decisions that affect their bills.
✊ What energy democracy means and why public participation is essential to creating an equitable energy system.
🗽 How you can get involved in the movement for a clean, affordable, publicly accountable, fossil fuel-free New York.
You'll leave with a clearer understanding of how our energy system works, practical strategies to help reduce energy burdens, and opportunities to organize alongside others working to build healthier, more resilient communities.
