Live SLAMDAM Flood Barrier Demonstration on Governors Island

How can cities protect vulnerable locations when flood risk changes from one storm to the next? Join WaveSave on Governors Island for a live demonstration of SLAMDAM, a reusable, water-filled mobile flood barrier designed for rapid deployment. The Trust for Governors Island selected WaveSave as one of seven winners of its 2026 Climate Solutions Challenge. The pilot forms part of the Governors Island Climate Piloting Program, which tests climate solutions in a real-world urban waterfront setting. During the demonstration, attendees will see how teams transport, position and fill SLAMDAM with locally available water. WaveSave will explain how cities, infrastructure operators and emergency-response teams can use mobile barriers to protect buildings, roads, utilities, waterfront areas and other vulnerable sites during coastal storms and heavy rainfall. The session will also cover deployment planning, site requirements, training, reuse and the role of temporary infrastructure alongside permanent flood-defence measures. Attendees can ask technical questions and discuss possible pilots and applications in New York City and other flood-prone locations.
