How participatory mapping and community-generated data are transforming conservation, advocacy, and decision-making. Participatory mapping is increasingly being used to support conservation, strengthen Indigenous and community rights, improve humanitarian response, and elevate local leadership in decision-making. As advances in technology make mapping tools more accessible, communities are creating and controlling their own data to tell their stories, advocate for their priorities, and influence policy and practice. This discussion will explore participatory mapping through multiple lenses, including conservation, humanitarian response, philanthropy, technology, and journalism, while examining how community-generated data can advance more equitable and effective outcomes.
