Utility bills have transitioned from a policy debate to a "household crisis," ranking alongside grocery prices as a top-tier 2026 concern for voters, 75% of whom pay their monthly energy bill to a for-profit utility corporation. At the same time, voters are turning against data centers, in part because of their impact on household utility customers. For-profit utilities are charging ratepayers for new fossil fuel plants to meet the demand, locking in decades of pollution and ever-rising household bills. This frustration is reshaping the public debate on affordability and the role of state utility commissions, governors, and legislatures. At our best, constituency organizations, coalitions, and elected leaders are innovating and implementing solutions that households notice in our wallets and in the air we breathe, and that we can replicate across the country.
