What would it take to put the fossil fuel industry on trial through the testimony of communities living with its consequences? For three years, the Future Generations Tribunal (FGT) has developed a tribunal and testimony model that enables communities to document lived experience, build civic evidence, and bring that evidence into spaces of public and legal accountability. Its work has engaged communities across continents and contributed civic evidence to proceedings at the International Court of Justice. Now FGT wants to take the model into a specific new arena: fossil fuel accountability. The Fossil Fuel Tribunal will be FGT’s first thematic tribunal, creating a space to gather testimony and evidence on the impacts of the fossil fuel industry and build new pathways for accountability. But moving from concept to a first hearing requires more than a strong methodology. It requires legal expertise, academic partners, media and storytelling capacity, venues, funding, community relationships, and people willing to help shape what the tribunal could become. This session is therefore not a launch where participants are asked simply to listen. FGT will put the Fossil Fuel Tribunal concept directly in front of the funders, partners, intellectuals, and practitioners who could help build it. The conversation will examine how FGT’s existing testimony methodology can translate into fossil fuel accountability, where it needs to evolve, and what would make a first hearing credible and consequential. It will also tackle a challenge familiar to many emerging accountability efforts: how do promising relationships with funders and institutions move from interest and introduction to genuine partnership? The goal is concrete: leave Climate Week with a stronger Fossil Fuel Tribunal and more of the people needed to get its first hearing off the ground. What to expect A working session centered on the Fossil Fuel Tribunal concept note. FGT will briefly introduce the tribunal model and what it has learned from three years of gathering testimony and civic evidence, before opening the room to interrogation and collaboration. Participants will be invited to identify gaps, challenge assumptions, and explore what they could contribute. The conversation will get practical about funding, legal architecture, academic partnerships, media and communications, venues, evidence, and other forms of support required to move from an idea to a functioning tribunal. This is a room for potential partners, not passive observers. Participants should come prepared to think about what it would take to build the tribunal and where they or their institutions might fit.
