As the federal climate landscape grows increasingly uncertain, states and local governments are emerging as the laboratories of climate innovation—and the front lines of implementation. From energy affordability and housing to food systems, infrastructure, environmental justice, and climate resilience, many of the most consequential climate policies are now being shaped in state legislatures, city halls, public utility commissions, and local communities. The State and Local Climate Policy Symposium will convene policymakers, advocates, researchers, organizers, and practitioners for a full day of conversations exploring the policies, politics, and partnerships driving climate action across the country. Through a series of panels, attendees will examine the biggest emerging challenges—from the AI-driven data center boom and rising utility costs to housing, food systems, insurance, and federal-state tensions—and explore the innovative policy solutions being developed to address them. More than a discussion of climate policy, this symposium is about how climate policy gets made. By bringing together leaders from across sectors and disciplines, the event will highlight the advocacy strategies, coalition-building, and political leadership needed to translate ambitious climate goals into durable public policy that is affordable, equitable, and effective.
