New research from Clean Air Task Force (CATF) shows that sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) can cut carbon dioxide emissions, reduce the formation of climate-warming contrails, and limit pollution levels in airport-adjacent communities. But while the carbon dioxide benefits of SAF are the same regardless of where the fuel is used, we can maximize the contrail- and health-related benefits by directing SAF to specific airports.
However, concentrating limited SAF resources at specific airports would create various logistical and fuel-handling challenges that would need to be overcome through a combination of policy- and market-focused strategies.
