Sweater Party

On a lot of American livestock operations, wool is the byproduct nobody knows what to do with. It piles up in the barn because moving it off-site costs more than it's worth, and for the folks who do get it spun, the wait can run up to a year. This Climate Week, Ambrook is soft launching Big Dipper Wool, a pilot batch of sweaters that took a shorter road – from Evan's flock in upstate New York to Green Mountain Spinnery and Muriel's of Vermont. The batch runs on an unlikely mix of tools: antique spinning equipment that's been working for generations, alongside 3D knitting machines that knit a sweater with barely any waste. Small mills like these, pairing old craft with new tech, are what make regional manufacturing possible. We'll have a conversation about what it means to be an American grower and producer today, and how new tools are changing what's possible at the local-economy scale.
