Rooted in Joy: A Cultural Power Ride

Rooted in Joy: The Culture, Art + Storytelling Bike Ride is a free, guided community experience presented by The Center for Cultural Power. This year’s ride will take participants through El Barrio and Harlem, exploring how climate justice is reflected in the neighborhoods’ art, culture, food, history and community leadership. Registration and check-in will take place from 11:00–11:30 AM. The ride will depart promptly at 11:30 AM and conclude by 2:00 PM. The guided ride and storytelling experience will last approximately 2.5 hours. Along the route, participants will visit outdoor public spaces connected to community gardens, public art, cultural institutions, neighborhood history and food. At each stop, storytelling guides will use place and art to explore climate-justice themes such as food sovereignty, cultural memory, community stewardship, health, resilience and the right of communities to shape their own futures. The ride will also highlight original artwork commissioned through The Center for Cultural Power’s Rooted in Joy campaign. Participants will learn about the featured artists, the stories behind their work and how their creative practices move climate narratives forward. Free art prints featuring selected campaign artwork will be shared with participants during the experience. A surprise guest will also join participants at one of the storytelling stops. Additional details will be announced closer to the event. This experience is designed to be welcoming to novice riders. Citi Bike access will be available to registered participants, and riders are also welcome to bring their own bicycles. Helmets will be available, though participants are encouraged to bring their own if possible. Detailed bike-access, arrival and safety instructions will be shared with registered participants before the event. Participation is free, but advance registration is required and space is limited. All storytelling stops will take place outdoors in public spaces;admission to or entry into the cultural institutions featured along the route is not included. Following the event, participants will receive a digital resource guide featuring information about the locations, artists, artwork and climate-justice themes highlighted during the ride, along with resources for independently experiencing the route.
