As fusion energy moves from the laboratory to the grid, it’s poised to play a key role in countries reassessing their energy independence and geopolitical strategies. Fusion relies on deuterium, which can be extracted from seawater, and lithium, which is relatively abundant and geographically distributed. That gives fusion the potential for a more diversified fuel supply than today’s oil, gas, and uranium-based energy system – while creating a new set of strategic questions around lithium-6, tritium, and the broader fusion supply chain. The decisions being made now – on standards, intellectual property, and export rules – will help determine who leads the industry in the decades ahead.
