Climate Week: Monarch Watch at Marine Park

Celebrate Climate Week NYC with Marine Park Alliance and former NYC Parks naturalist Mike Feller for a hands-on morning of monarch butterfly tagging in Marine Park. Each fall, monarch butterflies undertake an extraordinary migration south across North America. During this community science program, participants will explore Marine Park’s coastal habitats while attempting to safely capture, tag, and release migrating monarchs. Data collected through the Monarch Watch tagging program contributes to a long-term study of monarch migration and helps researchers better understand their movements and populations. Along the way, learn about the challenges monarchs face as changing climate conditions, habitat loss, and declines in native plants affect the resources they rely on throughout their migration. We’ll also explore how protecting natural areas and planting native pollinator gardens can provide important habitat for monarchs and other pollinators. No previous experience is necessary. Come learn about one of North America’s most remarkable migrations while contributing to real community science.
