As climate risks intensify across the Americas, cities are increasingly recognizing nature-based solutions as essential infrastructure for resilience, public health, biodiversity, water security and long-term economic prosperity. Yet despite growing momentum, most cities still struggle to move beyond isolated projects toward coordinated, city-wide, investment-ready programs. This session launches a new report, Nature-Based Solutions in Cities of the Americas: State of the Field and Pathways to Systemic Investment—the first cities-centered assessment of governance, implementation and financing across the Americas. Drawing on interviews with municipal leaders from across North, Central and South America, the report provides an evidence-based assessment of what is working, where implementation breaks down, and what cities, funders and investors can do to accelerate systemic deployment. The panel brings together municipal leaders, investors, insurers, philanthropic organizations and implementation intermediaries to explore what it takes to move urban nature-based solutions from promising projects to investment-ready programs. Participants will gain practical insight into how cities are overcoming governance, institutional and financing barriers to scale urban nature-based solutions. Rather than treating finance as the starting point, the discussion will examine how governance, cross-sector collaboration and institutional capacity create the conditions for attracting and deploying capital at scale. Drawing on evidence from municipal interviews across the Americas, the session will explore emerging financing structures, governance models, partnership approaches and investment pathways that can accelerate city-wide implementation while delivering measurable resilience, biodiversity and community benefits. The session will conclude by inviting interested cities, funders and implementation partners to help shape the next phase of this initiative: collaborative cohorts of cities that will apply the report’s findings to develop governance models, financing strategies and investment-ready pipelines for urban nature-based solutions, while accelerating peer learning and implementation across the Americas.
