Ensuring Climate Justice Through the Climate Justice Fellowship for Young Women A New York Climate Week Side Event by Women Environmental Programme (WEP) Climate change continues to disproportionately affect women and girls, particularly in vulnerable and marginalized communities, despite their limited contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, young women remain underrepresented in climate decision-making spaces, policy processes, and climate leadership opportunities. This event, organized by the Women Environmental Programme (WEP) during New York Climate Week, will showcase the transformative role of the WEP’s Climate Justice Fellowship for Young Women in building a new generation of women climate leaders, advocates, and changemakers. The session will highlight how empowering young women with knowledge, skills, mentorship, and platforms for engagement can advance climate justice and promote more inclusive and equitable climate action. Through inspiring fellowship stories, panel discussions, and interactive dialogue, participants will explore the intersections of gender equality, climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and social justice. The event will also provide an opportunity to share lessons learned, discuss innovative approaches to youth and women's leadership, and strengthen partnerships that support climate justice initiatives at local, national, and global levels. The discussion will bring together young women fellows from WEP’s climate justice fellowships, climate practitioners, policymakers, civil society leaders, development partners, and youth advocates to examine strategies for ensuring that climate solutions are responsive to the needs and voices of women and frontline communities.
