What can the objects that wash ashore tell us about the systems that put them there? “Souvenirs of the modern voyage” is a small exhibition tracing the journeys of marine debris as it arrives on fragile island ecosystems. Through objects, mapping, and visual storytelling, the session will explore the relationship between the “centres” where goods are produced and consumed and the “peripheries” where their waste can ultimately accumulate. The exhibition will introduce Xero Waste Carnic, an initiative highlighting the mounting waste crisis in India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These remote islands sit at the receiving end of waste flows that do not respect geographic or political boundaries, raising difficult questions about responsibility. When waste generated elsewhere washes ashore in a place with limited infrastructure to manage it, who is responsible for what happens next? By following debris rather than beginning with abstract statistics, the session offers a tangible way into a much larger conversation about consumption, waste, ocean systems, and environmental justice. It asks participants to consider not only where waste ends up, but the economic and material journeys that connect distant communities to one another. Participants will encounter visual material and stories from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands before working together to map and trace some of the systems behind marine debris. A facilitated discussion will connect these observations to broader questions of responsibility, consumption, and waste, creating an intimate space for participants to reflect on what these objects reveal about our relationship with distant places.
