The world is entering an era of climate overshoot, with a risk of crossing critical climate tipping points impacting water, food, and ecosystems. No country can deal with these problems alone. At the same time, the global community is facing a retreat from globalization and international cooperation, including reduced funding for international development and the UN. In the context of ongoing reform efforts, this panel will explore whether the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and wider UN system are capable of effectively responding to the worst climate threats and tipping points, or whether there are governance gaps that need to be filled.
