Caregiving, motherhood, migration, health, grief, burnout, family responsibilities, financial realities, identity shifts, recovery, and personal reinvention can alter the direction and pace of a career. These experiences are not simply interruptions to leadership. They can deepen the empathy, resilience, courage, perspective, self-awareness, and conviction women bring to their work. Building on the strong response to our Women with Non-Linear Careers in Sustainability conversation co-hosted with Good Principles™ during Toronto Climate Week in June, this Climate Week NYC book tour event continues the discussion through a new lens. It explores not only how women find their way into sustainability, but how their professional and personal journeys shape the leaders they become. Rather than a traditional panel or fireside chat, each featured speaker will have five to six minutes to share a focused reflection on her own journey. Together, these stories will explore career pivots, interdisciplinary experience, transferable skills, personal turning points, resistance, gatekeeping, burnout, reinvention, authenticity, community, and the courage to continue when the path ahead is uncertain. The event asks: How do women build meaningful sustainability careers when their paths do not follow a straight line—and how do they continue leading without losing themselves in an age of uncertainty, backlash, and resistance? They will leave with greater clarity about how to communicate the value of their own experiences, recognize transferable strengths, navigate professional transitions, and understand that a non-linear journey can be a source of credibility, perspective, and leadership. Tensie Whelan Distinguished Professor of Practice Emerita, was the Founding Director of the NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business. She now serves as Senior Advisor to CSB, where she is bringing her 35 years of experience working on local, national and international sustainability issues to engage businesses and investors in proactive and innovative mainstreaming of sustainability. As President of the Rainforest Alliance, she built the organization from a $4.5 million to $50 million budget, transforming the engagement of business with sustainability, recruiting 5,000 companies in more than 60 countries to work with Rainforest Alliance. Her previous work included serving as Executive Director of the New York League of Conservation Voters, Vice President of the National Audubon Society, Managing Editor of Ambio, a journal of the Swedish Academy of Sciences, and a journalist in Latin America. Tensie has served on numerous nonprofit boards and currently serves on the advisory boards of Domtar, Edelman, Giant Ventures, and Nespresso and is an Advisor to MIT Sloan Management Review. Tensie holds a B.A. from New York University, an M.A. from American University, and is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Owner President Management (OPM) Program. She was awarded the Stern Faculty Excellence Award in 2020 and made Distinguished Professor of Practice in 2023 in recognition of her contributions to Stern. Roberta Boscolo has over twenty years of experience in climate services, focusing on the Water-Energy-Food nexus in regions including Africa, South America, the Pacific, and Southeast Asia. At the World Meteorological Organization, she develops weather, water, and climate services to support energy resilience and renewable energy. Her role includes membership on the scientific advisory board for several European Commission projects. Dr Boscolo's work bridges climate science with socioeconomic sectors, especially energy. She partners with stakeholders such as international organizations, public and private sectors, academia, civil society, and media. Dr Boscolo is also celebrated as a top Sustainability Influencer by the Sustainability Magazine and Onalytica, and was awarded as one of the Global 50 Women in Sustainability™ by The SustainabilityX® Magazine for her commitment to advancing resilient, low-carbon energy solutions for all.
