Climate innovation depends on more than better technologies. It also depends on whether people, organizations, and communities develop the judgment, trust, legitimacy, relationships, and shared capabilities needed to use those technologies meaningfully. This research-led session examines the formation layer of sustainable innovation: the less visible processes that occur before technology adoption, entrepreneurship, collective action, and systems change become possible. Dr. Shane Snipes will present emerging research on community-centered innovation systems and the development of capable innovation actors. The discussion considers how community knowledge, entrepreneurial agency, organizational capability, and collective participation shape the movement from technological possibility to sustainable action. Joining from Barcelona, Marc Cortés of 4BlueTech will provide an applied climate-technology case examining environmental measurement, CO2 capture, real-time data, and AI-enhanced analysis. The case illustrates what becomes possible as environmental processes become increasingly measurable, while also raising a larger question: what human and organizational capabilities are required to turn better environmental intelligence into meaningful action? Together, the speakers will explore the distinction between being climate-tech equipped and becoming climate capable, connecting sustainability, community-centered innovation, AI, entrepreneurship, and systems change.
