Artificial intelligence (AI) is often framed as a tool for innovation and progress. But the reality is that it carries significant environmental costs and damage that are frequently overlooked. This workshop examines the growing climate impact of AI, with a focus on freeing ourselves from any powerlessness we feel in taking on the AI industrial complex. Large-scale data centers consume massive amounts of electricity;most often sourced from fossil fuels and require enormous quantities of water for cooling. As demand for AI systems grows, so too does their carbon footprint. While profit from AI is largely concentrated among major corporations and wealthy nations, the environmental burden often falls on frontline communities.
