The Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) is a non-profit civil association that promotes sustainable development through articulation with governments and civil society, in addition to disseminating the most current concepts and practices on the subject. CEBDS, which represents more than 100 companies, representing almost 50% of the national GDP, proposes concrete actions regarding the commitments assumed by the country in recent years.

CEBDS has been working collaboratively with companies from different economic activities related to issues related to Water and Biodiversity for almost two decades, and is today a reference organization on the subject in Brazil, with a strong presence in the elaboration and execution of practices aimed at sustainable construction and transformation. , based on advocacy actions, building consensus in the production chain and disseminating technical content.

According to the publication carried out by CEBDS, in “Solutions based on Nature for Business”, solutions based on nature, or SbN, are actions to protect, sustainably manage and/or recover natural or modified ecosystems, through an approach effective and adaptive that simultaneously delivers human well-being and benefits to biodiversity. Climate change, water scarcity and loss of biodiversity are some of the most urgent challenges faced by humanity, which can be solved by using nature itself. Considering the great importance of Brazil and the Amazon, with regard to SbN, it is considered a fundamental source and basis for thinking about new economic models that value and keep the forest standing.

According to the World Bank Report released in 2023, it points out that the value of keeping the Amazon Forest standing is about seven times higher than the profit that can be obtained with different economic exploration activities in the Legal Amazon. Preserving the forest is worth at least US$ 317 billion a year – the equivalent of R$ 1.5 trillion.

All of this total is linked to added value to projects via NBS. The business sector must be a central player in collective efforts to build more resilient ecosystems, playing a key role in promoting the role of nature in adaptation strategies in the face of a warming planet with less biodiversity.
