Four weeks to Climate Week NYC - How can we make societies more resilient to climate change?

15th August 2023 2 min read

This year Climate Week NYC will look not just at the solutions we have to tackle climate change but also at the impacts it’s already having – and how we can make our communities and industries more resilient.

Better access to data can help subnational governments to design and implement more targeted climate resilience actions that save lives and help people feel safer. In 2021, the Lloyd’s Register Foundation conducted the second edition of their World Risk Poll – a global study to understand people’s perceptions and experiences of risks to their personal safety, including severe weather, climate change and vulnerabilities in disaster resilience.

The Poll found that more than a third of people in Eastern, Central and Western Africa have experienced a disaster from a natural hazard in the last five years. Our Under2 Coalition members also tell us that they are experiencing more difficulties than ever before, with 81% of those reporting to CDP in 2022 saying that they are now facing significant climate hazards.

So there’s no time to lose in building resilience to a climate crisis that will escalate in the coming years. While we must continue efforts to reach net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest, it's clear that this needs to go hand in hand with practical steps to adapt to change on the ground.

This year we're hosting a series of resilience webinars and roundtable events with the Lloyd's Register Foundation to look at how subnational governments, in particular, can improve their resilience against climate impacts. The first of these takes place today with the next scheduled for Climate Week NYC.

Climate Week NYC starts on Sunday, September 17 with the Opening Ceremony. On Monday and Tuesday, September 18-19, Climate Group hosts The Hub Live, Climate Week NYC’s interactive program for innovative solutions, technologies and ideas that drive forward climate action now.
