Morrison & Foerster

We are Morrison & Foerster — a global firm of exceptional credentials. Our clients include some of the largest financial institutions, investment banks, and Fortune 100, technology, and life sciences companies. The Financial Times has named the firm to its lists of most innovative law firms in North America every year that it has published its Innovative Lawyers Reports in the region. In the past few years, Chambers USA has honored MoFo’s Privacy and Data Security, Bankruptcy, and IP teams with Firm of the Year awards, the Corporate/M&A team with a client service award, and the firm as a whole as Global USA Firm of the Year. Our lawyers are committed to achieving innovative and business-minded results for our clients, while preserving the differences that make us stronger. The firm also has a long history of commitment to the community through providing pro bono legal services, including litigating for civil rights and civil liberties, improving public education for poor children, advocating for veterans, promoting international human rights, winning asylum for the persecuted, and safeguarding the environment.

Morrison & Foerster is honored to support Climate Week NYC 2019 because: (1) the short term ramifications of the changes in climate – from floods to fires to sea level rise – which have an increasing impact on our clients and a disproportionate impact on those in poverty around the world; and (2) our belief that because of climate change, the assumptions underlying the economic models for our clients will prove wrong in the long term, accelerating the need for more innovative legal solutions. Therefore, our attorneys have been working for more than 20 years to develop and hone capital markets mechanisms to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Specifically, we advise public companies on how to integrate ESG, and particularly reduction of emissions and assessment of climate risk, into their strategies and board-level decision making. We advise investors – from foundations to growth equity funds – on how to ensure that their investments make a positive social and environmental impact as well as appropriate IRR. We advise companies and tax-exempt entities on how to structure hybrid or tandem structures, to take the best from the non-profit world to enhance impact in the for-profit world and vice-versa. We advise entrepreneurs and inventors on how best to ensure that their technology, focused on emission and risk reduction, is implemented at scale. We advise a wide array of clients on the use of new corporate forms and other tools through M&A to preserve and accelerate climate strategies. And as one of the original signatories of the Lawyers for a Sustainable Economy, we are devoting hundreds of pro bono hours to helping the most creative but resource-constrained among us craft new solutions.

We are particularly proud to support the work of our nonprofit clients, such as the World Wildlife Fund, California Clean Energy Fund, the Calvert Foundation, Clean Energy Trust, CREO Syndicate, Skoll Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, PRIME Coalition, Power Africa Recharging Conservation, RARE, Stone Barns, and FloodIQ, in the amazing work that they are doing to save the planet on behalf of all of us.
