Ingka Group is a strategic partner in the IKEA franchise system, operating IKEA Retail in 30 countries.
The IKEA vision is to create a better everyday life for the many people. Climate change could severely threaten this. It already has a visible impact on our business and it is urgent to act now. The total IKEA climate footprint is an estimated 0.1% of the world’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We have a big responsibility – and an opportunity – to make a positive difference on climate change. We are committed to the Paris Agreement and will contribute to limiting the global temperature increase to well below 2°C, aiming for 1.5°C, by the end of the century.
From our own history we know that challenges can become opportunities and lead to amazing innovations. That’s why we remain optimistic. By 2030, our ambition is to become climate positive by reducing more greenhouse gas emissions than the IKEA value chain emits, while growing the IKEA business.
The IKEA climate footprint and responsibility stretches across the entire lifecycle of our products – from the extraction of materials, the stores and touchpoints where we meet our customers to the use and end-of-life of our products. To take action and become climate positive, we are:
1. Eliminating greenhouse gas emissions: We will reduce GHG emissions from the IKEA value chain in absolute terms by working with our partners, suppliers and customers around the world. Where possible, we aim to eliminate them.
2. Storing carbon in land, plants and products: We will explore and improve ways to store carbon through forest and agricultural practices. We will ensure that carbon remains stored in our products longer through the circular economy.
3. Going beyond IKEA: We will address a larger climate footprint than our own value chain by collaborating with our customers, suppliers and partners to reduce their total GHG emissions.
4. Taking action together: We will lead by example and engage with others to advocate for policy changes and inspire action to achieve a low-carbon society.
