The Problem: Girls and women are disproportionately impacted by climate change, but are left out of climate solutions. Women are grossly underrepresented in sectors such as science and technology that are leading climate solutions. Additionally, the UN reports that only 0.2% of climate-related development aid goes to feminist-focused or women-led orgs and only 3% of philanthropic environmental funding supports girls’ and women’s environmental activism. We need women’s expertise and ideas to catalyze climate innovation for us all.
The Solution - Citizen AI Ecopreneurship: Technovation is the world’s largest technology entrepreneurship program for young women. It has empowered over 100,000 girls and women from 120+ countries to develop ~4000 mobile & AI apps tackling climate change. Technovation is the only global, tech entrepreneurship program for young women that has proven impact and a scalable model. External evaluation shows that Technovation is helping close the gender gap in STEM, fields which are leading climate innovation. 60% of alumnae work in STEM jobs compared to the 27% US national average.
With AI, girls on the frontlines of climate change can develop powerful, scalable solutions. Technovation empowers girls to get familiar with satellite data, global and national data sets, and then to layer on real-time, on-the-ground information through mobile phones and low-cost sensors to drive more effective and innovative solutions. Empowering women with the skills to develop technology to tackle the climate problems they face will accelerate climate innovation.
