Sustainable STEEL Principles -- Official Launch

RMI’s Center for Climate-Aligned Finance will proudly launch the Sustainable STEEL Principles at Climate Week NYC, showcasing the world’s first climate-aligned finance agreement for steel.

Leading lenders--including ING, Societe Generale, Citigroup, Standard Chartered and UniCredit--convened by the Center for Climate-Aligned Finance, have designed a sector-specific measurement and disclosure framework to enable banks to set targets, measure progress, and support the decarbonization of this high-emitting, hard-to-abate sector. Steel is the largest source of industrial CO2 emissions, accounting for 7% of global CO2 emissions, and low-carbon technologies do yet not exist at commercial scale.

In addition to unveiling the banking signatories to the Sustainable STEEL Principles, this session will examine:

• How this framework can be used to align steel loan portfolios with science-based climate targets.

• How lenders can apply the agreement learnings for client engagement purposes

• The financing gap that remains to unlock final investment decisions for first-of-a-kind plants

Senior executives from signatory banks, leading steelmakers, and climate standard-setters will attend this invite-only event. Selected journalists have also been invited to attend. For more information, visit https://climatealignment.org/focus-areas/#steel
