Beginning at the beloved McCarren Park, this family-friendly fun run culminates at the 4th annual Kingsland Wildflower Rooftop Festival. The run marks the start of Climate Week NYC and seeks to bring attention to environmental issues here in North Brooklyn and across the world: the 5K course is mapped to traverse two waterways - the East River and Newtown Creek - and feature eight local green spaces: McCarren Park, Bushwick Inlet Park, American Playground, Transmitter Park, Greenpoint Playground, Newtown Barge Park, Newtown Creek Nature Walk, and Kingsland Wildflowers. Through it all, you will discover Greenpoint’s diverse network of parks and playgrounds, innovative adaptive nature walks, climate change themed street art, and the beautiful views from the Kingsland Wildflower rooftop sanctuary.
As this event fittingly coincides with the start of Climate Week NYC, our park tour will highlight the history of Greenpoint’s environmental activism and initiatives to mitigate climate change, ecosystem restoration, and sea-level rise. The course will finish at the Kingsland Wildflower festival, where participants are invited to celebrate with food and drink and join in for an unveiling ceremony of Greenpoint Innovations’ latest #ArtPlusPurpose climate change awareness-raising mural.
Mural artists @DanielleBKNYC & @LexiBellaart will be available on-site at the incredible mural, which will showcase how the efforts being undertaken at Newtown Creek exemplify the powerful role that ecosystem restoration can play in serving as a natural climate solution. Runners will also have the opportunity to see the amazing views from the Kingsland Wildflower rooftop garden, and learn more about the North Brooklyn Parks Alliance and other local environmental partners, like Newtown Creek Alliance.
All participants will receive: 2019 NBPA Greenpoint Parks Run-Around T-shirt, complimentary entry to Kingsland Wildflower Fest, and bag drop from McCarren Park to Kingsland.
This event is a partnership among the North Brooklyn Parks Alliance, NYC Parks, Newtown Creek Alliance, Kingsland Wildflowers, Greenpoint Innovations, and Broadway Stages. Proceeds will support the mission and work of the North Brooklyn Parks Alliance - a 501(c)(3) tax exempt non-profit organization founded in 2003 to improve, maintain, and create parkland in Greenpoint and Williamsburg.
Will there be a bag drop?
Yes! There will be a mobile bag drop so you can drop your bag at the start, at McCarren Park, and it will meet you at the end of the race, at Kingsland Wildflowers. We recommend leaving valuables at home or carrying them on you.
