Climate Week NYC Opening Ceremony: initial speakers announced
New York City: The Climate Group has announced that a number of senior figures from the world of business and government will be speaking at the Climate Week NYC Opening Ceremony on Monday, 24 September 2018. The announcement comes following Mayor de Blasio publicly welcoming the biggest Climate Week event in the world for its tenth year in NYC.
- Business speakers confirmed to speak include Brad Smith, President and Chief Legal Officer of Microsoft, the CEOs of ENEL, Ricoh and ROCKWOOL Group.
- Political speakers who can be announced are Governor Brown, State of California; Patricia Espinosa, the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC and President Moïse, of the Republic of Haiti – other confirmations to be provided at a later date.
- Mayor de Blasio welcomes Climate Week NYC in its tenth year as the biggest Climate Week in the world.
The first session, ‘Time to Step Up’, will hear from Governor Brown of California, Patricia Espinosa, the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC and President Moïse, of the Republic of Haiti alongside other national leaders who will be confirmed at a later date. A global call will be delivered to national governments gathered in New York for the United Nations General Assembly (which takes place the same week) to make their national commitments more ambitious by 2020. Governments and other representatives are expected to back this call, in line with achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
Brad Smith, President and Chief Legal Officer of Microsoft will deliver an exciting keynote to discuss what transformative changes are already under way for business, and where major progress needs to accelerate towards 2030. The Opening Ceremony will also feature keynote addresses from senior business figures including Jake Yamashita, CEO of Ricoh, Jens Birgersson, CEO of ROCKWOOL Group and Francesco Starace, CEO of ENEL. Several CEOs will highlight how their organizations are taking action against climate change and asserting the position they think business should be in by 2020.
Nathaniel Bullard, Global Head of Executive Insights at Bloomberg NEF, will reflect as well as look ahead to trends within climate action. Fleming Voetmann, VP of International Copper Association and Robin Chase, co-founder and former CEO of Zipcar will also speak about the future of climate action.
Last week The Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, announced his support for Climate Week NYC, commenting:

Celebrating its tenth year, Climate Week NYC will be the biggest Climate Week event in the world, with over 140 events taking place across the five boroughs of NYC. This year there will even stronger attention paid to the announcements and commitments made as the leading event comes just days after the Global Climate Action Summit in California, and runs alongside the United Nations General Assembly, who provide official recognition to Climate Week NYC.
