Climate Week NYC announces plans for 2019
Climate Week NYC – the largest climate week in the world – has announced details of this year’s program which takes place September 23 – 29, 2019.
The Climate Group, an international nonprofit, runs Climate Week NYC each year in coordination with the United Nations and the City of New York, and this year it will run in parallel with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Climate Action Summit.
The Climate Group is delighted to announce the participation of President Carlos Alvarado Quesada of Costa Rica at the Opening Ceremony taking place on Monday, September 23. President Alvarado Quesada has committed Costa Rica to be the first fully decarbonized country in the world and we look forward to profiling this ambitious goal.
President Alvarado Quesada commented: "Our house is on fire and our civilization is at risk. We must step up to ensure we avoid the worst of the climate catastrophe. The science is clear, we have a short time to accelerate climate action and to shift our economies towards zero emissions in 2050. We need to deliver concrete actions, programs, legislation, we need to deliver hope for our citizens, and for our children; we need to deliver hope for our planet."
Last year, the Opening Ceremony featured The Rt. Hon Jacinda Ardern MP, Prime Minister of New Zealand; President Hilda Heine, Marshall Islands; President Martín Vizcarra, Peru and President Jovenel Moïse, Republic of Haiti. Further speaker announcements for this year’s Opening Ceremony will be made shortly.
Helen Clarkson, CEO of The Climate Group said, “At Climate Week NYC this year we will be bringing together businesses, governments, cities, civil society and campaigners to demonstrate the action that is needed to tackle the climate emergency. With these collective examples we aim to give confidence to national governments as they go into the process of increasing the ambition of their Nationally Determined Contributions in 2020, and inspire them to make bold commitments for the following decade.”
Climate Week NYC 2019 is being supported by Salesforce, as its Headline Partner; McKinsey & Company, as The Opening Ceremony Knowledge Partner; Bank of America, as The Hub Opening Day Presenting Partner; Platinum Sponsors AT&T and the International Copper Association; and Gold Sponsor Ørsted.
Chief Impact Officer and EVP of Corporate Relations at Salesforce, Suzanne DiBianca, commented, “When it comes to protecting our planet and combating climate change, companies have a key role to play. Climate Week NYC is the largest climate gathering in the world and has been focused on driving climate action forward since 2009. It’s an honor to be the Headline Partner this year, and we look forward to coming together with other businesses, NGOs and government officials to catalyze the action our planet needs now.”
The Climate Group is delighted that the UN Secretary-General will be hosting his 2019 Climate Action Summit within Climate Week NYC. Climate Week NYC is coordinating with the Secretary-General’s office to ensure that this year's event program will reflect the core tracks of the UN’s summit, enabling a larger platform for more events and to give everyone access to take part in this huge moment.
