NEW YORK: For the third year in a row, the launch of Climate Week NYC will be marked by the Empire State Building turning green on the evening of September, 19. This iconic moment has become a core part of Climate Week NYC, drawing the city’s attention to the various events taking part in New York throughout the week.
The building, which was completed in 1931, has recently undergone an energy efficiency retrofit, leading to energy savings of 38% and US$4.4 million annually and the lightsthat will illuminate the top floors of the famous tower are computer-driven light-emitting diode (LED) system.
LEDs are central to one of The Climate Group’s key initiatives, the LED-scale up programme, which calls for every city and utility in the world to switch to LED street lighting – or the energy efficient equivalent – by 2025. With energy savings of up to 50-70%, LED lighting is seen as an immediate opportunity to boost energy efficiency and drive emissions reductions.
Speaking at a CWNYC event in 2014, Christiana Figueres, former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) , praised the Empire State Building’s retrofit, stating: “What could be more symbolic of a city’s net zero efforts?”
New York State is at the forefront in the fight against climate change. As a member of The Climate Group’s States & Regions Alliance, it recently published a briefing showing how adaptation and mitigation measures are securing a climate resilient future for its citizens.
Climate Week NYC takes place from September 19 -25. During the first UN General Assembly post Paris – and with the US elections just eight weeks away – it will gather leaders from business and government to demonstrate how continued investment in innovation, technology and clean energy will drive profitability and lead us toward net zero emissions.
