All day  |  All over NYC -
    Open to the Public  |

Ever wondered what you can do to help in the climate change challenge? Now is your chance to get your hands dirty and volunteer in your neighborhood on Saturday, September 19th to help make NYC a greener place to live. We all have to pitch in to meet the challenge of climate change. Let's get started right here, on the streets and sidewalks, rooftops and parks where we live, work, and play. On ioby.org, New Yorkers can find great environmental projects in their own neighborhood and donate or volunteer to get involved. On September 19, you can get connected to important citizen-led, grassroots projects around New York City, including a lake clean up in Prospect Park, coastal restoration with the American Littoral Society, and more. Come get your hands dirty and do something about climate change!

    The Documentary- No Impact Man:
Author Colin Beavan, in research for his next book, began the No Impact Project in November 2006. A newly self-proclaimed environmentalist who could no longer avoid pointing the finger at himself, Colin leaves behind his liberal complacency for a vow to make as little environmental impact as possible for one year. No more automated transportation, no more electricity, no more non-local food, no more material consumption…no problem. That is, until his espresso-guzzling, retail-worshipping wife Michelle and their two year-old daughter are dragged into the fray.

We invite you for a special Climate Week NYC screening followed by a panel discussion.
Panelists include Ben Margolis, Campaigns Director, TckTckTck campaign, Rick Velleu, Creative Director for The Climate Group and Justin Schein, Film Director of No Impact Man.

  • NYC Cool Roofs - Join our Rooftop Cooling Program by Volunteering

    Sept 19-Oct 9, 9am-3pm  |  Long Island City (exact address TBD) -
    New York, NY
    Open to the Public  |

NYC Cool Roofs is a green initiative to reduce energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions, and local temperatures by coating the roofs white. Volunteers are needed to help coat 5-10 roofs in Long Island City (exact location tbd).

The coating is a three step process and buildings will require at least 3 days of work with 24 rain-free hours in between each step in order to be completed. Volunteers are encouraged to commit to taking a roof through all three phases, but can volunteer for one day. If the weather cooperates, we are aiming to have this project completed between September 21 and 25. Sign up for dates within this time, but if you can be flexible for later dates, we may need you.

This project is a partnership of NYC Service - the Mayor's initiative to promote volunteerism in NYC - the Community Environmental Center and Green City Force.

For more information and to sign up to volunteer, go to nycservice.org.

    3:00pm  |  Madison Square Park -
    23rd St and 5th Ave
    New York, NY

Natalia Zukerman will be performing at the Madison Square Music Series and will be speaking about Climate Week NYC.

Zukerman does blues Brooklyn style. Her original songs, mixing folk, blues, and rock can be rough and tumble at one moment and sweet the next, but at the heart of them all are her bona-fide guitar chops.
