Small City Resilience

A roundtable discussion on small and medium-sized cities take on climate resilience hosted by the Institute for Sustainable Cities at Hunter College in partnership with the National League of Cities, Institute for Building Technology and Safety, Urban Climate Change Research Network, Consortium for Climate Risk in the Urban Northeast and CitiesIPCC.

Small and medium-sized cities around the world offer incredible opportunity for climate resilience, and incredible loss if left out of the resilience renaissance being led by large cities. Based on lessons from Katrina, Sandy, Harvey, Irma, Maria in small cities in Louisiana, New York, Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico, expert practitioners and researchers will discuss what is new in small and medium-sized city climate resilience, including:

  • Enabling capacities to prioritize resilience that addresses immediate community needs
  • Political drivers to engage elected and appointed officials
  • Measurement tools to create pragmatic and incremental resilience plans
  • Innovative models to finance and fund the next era of climate resilience
  • Collateral benefits to ensure judicious use of limited resources

The event will be moderated by Dr. William Solecki, a Professor of Urban Planning and the funding director of CUNY Institute for Sustainable Cities. Speakers will include:
